What Safety Features Should We Look For When Buying a Car?

May 20, 2021 Car Service & Repair Blog PitStopArabia

In one of the previous blog posts, we talked about things to consider when buying a second-hand car. In response to that article, we received multiple queries. While we answered most of them, one question was quite common. We have decided to address that question in today’s blog post. Reading the title, you would have already guessed the question. If not, here it is:

Safety Features to Look for When Buying a Car

Without taking any further time, let us get straight to the point.

Air Bags

It a necessary safety feature that is built into all modern vehicles nowadays. Before buying any car, enquire about the number of airbags. Previously, cars only had two airbags located in the front of the vehicle. Nowadays, you can find airbags in the back too. If your car doesn't have airbags, we recommend that you replace them. The reason is that airbags play a vital role in protecting you during a collision. Therefore, make sure that the car has airbags and they work properly.

Electronic Stability Control

Again, most modern vehicles come with this feature. This feature prevents the car from skidding and swerving, thereby offering protection against untoward incidents. Electronic stability control is a combination of sensors that detect rotation, wheel speed, sideways motion, steering angle, and other things. Based on the data from these parts, the electronic stability control springs into action. If a vehicle you are planning to buy does not have this feature, it should not dissuade you from buying it. If it does, it is indeed a welcome feature.

Antilock Brakes

The more commonly known name for this braking system is ABS. If your current vehicle or the one you are planning to buy does not come with ABS, we highly recommend considering an alternate car. The reason is that ABS goes a long way in protecting you and your loved ones. Remember, it is the braking distance that is the difference in life and death during a collision. Therefore, having the latest braking system is highly recommended.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

Let us assume that while driving, your car is about to get into a collision. For whatever reason, you fail to react in time and apply the brakes. In such situations, an automobile with AEB automatically apply the brakes and save you from an accident. Therefore, if planning to buy a new car, look for one with AEB.

Lane Departure Warning/Lane Keep

These are two separate systems.

The first system sounds a warning when the car starts drifting out of the lane. It usually happens when a driver is not paying attention to the road or is feeling sleepy. In some vehicles, instead of a warning, the steering will start buzzing.

The second system is much more advanced. Instead of a warning, it will steer the car back to the lane. Usually, this system comes in high-end vehicles.

Rear View Camera

It has become a necessary feature these days. The rear-view camera is useful when reversing as it gives you a complete view of what is behind the vehicle. This way, you can see if there any children or animals behind.

Wrap Up

This concludes our article. We acknowledge that there are numerous other safety features that vehicles should have. However, we have limited this blog post to the necessary ones.
