Legal Tire Tread Depth in UAE and Its Importance

Jun 12, 2019     PitStopArabia

Unknown to many people, UAE has a particular set of laws which governs different aspect of tires such as their storage, manufacturing, and use. While many people would find it surprising, but given the UAE's climate, it is quite a sensible thing to do. Road accidents are the top-most cause of untimely deaths in the UAE, especially during the summer months.

The deaths are down to various reasons, one of which is the use of low-quality tires and improper car maintenance. Moreover, in summer months, the temperatures rise to 50° C exerting more pressure on the tires, making proper maintenance even more critical. Standard tires can withstand temperatures of only 30° C. Therefore, tires for use in the UAE mustbe designed to withstand such high temperatures.

Furthermore, a 'Summer without Accidents' campaign was launched to raise awareness among drivers in the UAE about safe driving and adequately maintaining their cars. Nevertheless, accidents due to tires continue to occur as people fail to properly observe the law, while sellers often flout the law as well. Understanding the law will also help us to know the legal tire tread depth in the UAE.

What does the law say about tires and tire tread depth?

The law on tires in the UAE was issued by the Emirates Standardisation and Metrology Authority (Esma). One of the regulations is that tires must be able to withstand temperatures of up to 50° C for use in the UAE. Another regulation stipulates that tires must not be stored in temperatures excess of 25° C and that tires cannot be placed on top of each other while in storage.

Unfortunately, these regulations are not correctly followed by sellers. There is a complete ban on the import of retreaded tires. Moreover, reuse of old tires is completely banned except for buses and trucks. Even then, the tires must be retreaded by one of 25 approved manufacturers.

Coming to the tire tread depth, Esma has clearly defined the legal limits for the different categories of vehicles.

Vehicle Category

Legal Tire Tread Depth

Light

1.6 mm

Medium Sized

2.4 mm

Buses and Trucks

3.2 mm

Motorbikes

0.8 mm

Apart from these changes, the other regulations relating to tire load, manufacturing date, size, speed rating, temperature rating etc. remain unchanged.

Why Should You Pay Attention to the Tread Depth?

Although it might just seem like another requirement, following the legal tread depth limit is critical to your safety and that of others. If it is not followed, you can be subject to a hefty fine. Apart from a heavy fine, low tread depth can decrease your car grip impacting its handling and performance.

Moreover, the braking distance is also impacted as low tread depth tires require more distance to bring the vehicle to a halt. Having a minimal stopping distance is necessary and only be guaranteed if the tire’s depth is at an optimal level.
