Is Tesla stopping Model S and Model X production in 2026?

May 25, 2026 News & Updates PitStopArabia

Yes. Production of the Tesla Model S and Model X officially ended in May 2026.

The last units of both iconic electric vehicles rolled off the assembly line at Tesla's Fremont factory in California on May 10, 2026. This marks the end of a 14-year run for the Model S (since 2012) and an 11-year run for the Model X (since 2015).

Tesla officially announced the news via its social media channels, stating: "14 years of Model S, 11 years of Model X. They witnessed pure electric travel transform from a minority choice to an everyday reality for more and more people."

Why Did Tesla Discontinue the Model S and Model X?

Tesla's decision to end production of its flagship models is driven by three key factors, all confirmed by official Tesla communications and verified media reports. Best Electric Car in UAE market trends are also shifting toward newer AI-focused EV platforms.

1. Declining Sales, Less Than 3% of Total Deliveries

In 2025, Tesla delivered approximately 1.63 to 1.64 million vehicles globally. Of these, the Model 3 and Model Y accounted for a staggering 97% of all deliveries. The Model S and Model X together represented less than 3% of Tesla's total sales volume.

In actual numbers, the "Other Models" category (which includes Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck) totalled only about 50,850 units in 2025. Of these, the Model S and X specifically accounted for an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 units, a tiny fraction of overall sales.

China market data shows an even steeper decline: Model S/X annual sales in China dropped to fewer than 2,000 units.

2. Severely Underutilised Production Capacity

The Fremont factory had an annual production capacity of roughly 100,000 units reserved for the Model S and X lines. However, with actual demand hovering around just 30,000 units per year, the capacity utilisation rate was estimated below 30%.

Running dedicated production lines at such low efficiency is not economically viable. Tesla CFO and analysts noted that maintaining two separate assembly lines for low-volume, high-complexity vehicles was draining resources that could be better allocated elsewhere.

3. Shift in Corporate Strategy, From Cars to AI and Robotics

This is the biggest reason. Elon Musk has stated that Tesla is transforming from an "automotive company" into a "physical AI company".

The Fremont factory space previously occupied by Model S and X production lines will be completely repurposed to manufacture Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots. The converted facility aims to produce 1 million Optimus robots annually.

Musk explained the economics clearly during the January earnings call: "We are going to take the Model S and X production space in our Fremont factory and convert that into an Optimus factory with a long-term goal of having a million units a year... That is slightly sad, but it's time to bring the S and X programs to an end and shift to an autonomous future."

Tesla discontinued the Model S and Model X due to declining demand, high production costs, and a stronger focus on AI-driven future technologies like Cybercab and Optimus robotics.

At the same time, the company is prioritising mass-market EVs such as the Model 3 and Model Y, as many buyers now consider the Model Y one of the best electric vehicles for daily driving, efficiency, and practicality.

What Does This Mean for UAE and GCC Buyers?

For Existing Model S/X Owners

Concern

Implication

Parts availability

Tesla has committed to supporting parts for at least 5–7 years. However, specialised Model S and Model X components may become harder to source over time.

Resale value

Ultra-rare Signature and Plaid variants may appreciate in value due to collector demand. Standard high-mileage trims may face faster depreciation.

Service support

Tesla service centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and across the GCC will continue servicing existing Model S and Model X vehicles.

For Buyers Still Wanting a Model S or X

  • New units are no longer available; production has ended globally.
  • Limited inventory, a few Model X units may remain in stock at select Tesla locations worldwide, but Model S inventory has already sold out.
  • Used market, Pre-owned Model S and X remain available through secondary channels in the UAE. However, prices for well-maintained examples may see short-term volatility.

Alternative Luxury EVs in the UAE Market

With Tesla exiting the premium luxury segment, buyers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and across the region seeking a high-end electric vehicle now have several alternatives:

  • Porsche Taycan Premium German electric sports sedan
  • Audi e-tron GT: High-performance luxury electric grand tourer
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS Ultra-luxury electric sedan
  • Lucid Air American luxury EV with exceptional range
  • BMW i7 Executive-class electric sedan

GCC buyers who prioritise exclusivity will likely shift toward these European and American alternatives.
