One essential and not so complicated DIY maintenance is flushing the car's radiator, which is often neglected by many people. The radiator is directly responsible for the car's cooling system. It prevents the engine from overheating by circulating water coolant to different engine parts.

The general rule is to flush and pour new liquid coolant in the radiator after 100,000 miles or 5 years, whichever may come first. The method of cleaning the car’s radiator is known as flushing. The purpose of flushing is to remove the rust and sludge accumulated over time in the vehicle's cooling system.

If you don't flush the radiator on time, it can block the car's cooling system, which results in the dangerous engine overheating. You can flush the radiator at home yourself instead of going to a mechanic. In this article, we will tell you step by step how you can clean the radiator yourself.

HOW TO FLUSH THE RADIATOR

STEP-1

If you own an old car and fill water in the radiator instead of a coolant, then, in that case, your radiator will be very rusty. The primary purpose of using a coolant instead of water is that coolant contains an anti-rust mixture, not allowing rust to develop in the radiator and circulate throughout the engine.

Please ensure that the vehicle is completely cooled down before starting this process.

You must flush out the water thoroughly, rinse the radiator, and finally pour coolant. You need to drain the water from the radiator before pouring it with a coolant. PitStopArabia recommends adding a radiator flush rust remover in the water to remove the rust, which otherwise would remain in the system.

STEP-2

Add the radiator flush in the water inside the radiator. Do not instantly flush after pouring it. Start your car and keep pouring the radiator flush. Once the radiator is fully filled with flush and water, close the radiator lid and keep the engine running for 15-20 mins.

STEP-3

When your car's engine is warmed up, and the fan is turned off automatically, now is the time to flush the water. Before you drain the water, check the temperature of the water by touching the lower pipe since it might have reached the boiling point. By doing so, you can avoid injury. Use a screwdriver to open the lower pipe and discharge the water entirely. Once all is flushed, put the water pipe inside the radiator and clean it with water until all the rust has been removed, and you can now finally see clear water being flushed. Finally, you can now connect the pipe back.

STEP-4

This is the final step in which you finally fill the radiator with a coolant to prevent it from rusting. Make sure to completely fill the radiator. Buying only a single bottle of coolant will not be sufficient. You need to buy at least 3 bottles. Fill the radiator with the coolant gently. The moment coolant reaches the highest level, it's time for you to turn on your vehicle to circulate the coolant throughout the engine. Close the radiator cap once the coolant reaches the maximum level.
